China Adds 10 U.S. Firms to Unreliable Entities List Over Taiwan Arms Sales

In a significant move reflecting rising tensions, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced on Thursday that ten U.S. companies have been added to its unreliable entities list. The decision comes as a response to these companies’ involvement in arms sales to the Taiwan region, actions that Beijing asserts undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The listed companies include major defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, and Lockheed Martin Missile System Integration Lab. According to the MOC announcement, these entities will face prohibitions on engaging in China-related import or export activities and will be barred from making new investments within China.

The sanctions extend beyond corporate restrictions; senior executives of the affected companies will be banned from entering China. Their work permits and visitor or residency statuses will be revoked, and any related applications they submit will not be approved, as stated by the ministry.

“These companies have engaged in arms sales to the Taiwan region and conducted cooperation on military technologies in recent years, despite China’s strong opposition,” the MOC stated. “Their actions severely violated the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, severely undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

China’s unreliable entity provisions are designed to target foreign entities that threaten the country’s national security. The MOC emphasized that the Chinese government remains welcoming to foreign companies looking to invest and expand their businesses in China. “We are committed to providing a stable, fair, and predictable business environment for law-abiding companies operating in China,” the ministry added.

This development underscores the complexities of U.S.-China relations, particularly regarding the Taiwan region, which Beijing considers a part of its territory under the one-China principle. The arms sales by U.S. companies have been a point of contention, with China frequently voicing strong opposition.

The addition of these companies to the unreliable entities list may have significant implications for international businesses operating in China, highlighting the geopolitical risks associated with cross-strait relations and U.S.-China ties. Observers will be watching closely to see how this action affects both the defense industry and broader trade relations between the two economic giants.
