China and Peru, two nations with rich histories and ancient civilizations, have been connected since the 17th century. Over the centuries, Chinese immigrants have woven their culture into the fabric of Peruvian society, creating a unique blend of traditions and shared heritage.
In November 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange between the two countries. Recently, CGTN returned to the museum to revisit this significant moment and explore the ongoing impact of Sino-Peruvian relations.
Rafael Varón Gabai, the museum’s director, emphasized the enduring connection between the two cultures. “The interaction between China and Peru is not just historical; it’s a living exchange that continues to enrich both societies,” he remarked.
Rubén Tang, former director of the Confucius Institute at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), shared insights into the educational collaborations. “Through language and cultural programs, we are building bridges that foster mutual understanding and open doors for future cooperation,” he said.
Rodrigo Campos, director of the Tusanaje project, which focuses on the Chinese diaspora in Peru, highlighted the contributions of Chinese-Peruvians. “The Chinese community has played a significant role in Peru’s development, influencing everything from cuisine to commerce,” he noted.
These cultural exchanges are not only strengthening bilateral ties between China and Peru but are also enhancing relations between China and the broader Latin American region. As both nations continue to collaborate, their shared history and cultural synergy pave the way for a prosperous future.
