Professor Shahbaz Khan, Director of UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, emphasized the importance of embracing the spirit of the Silk Roads to tackle contemporary global issues. “To solve many problems of today, we need to continue the spirit of the Silk Roads,” he stated.
The Silk Roads, historically significant trade routes connecting Asia with Europe and Africa, were instrumental in fostering economic exchange as well as cultural and intellectual interactions among diverse civilizations. Professor Khan suggests that reviving the fundamental principles of openness, cooperation, and mutual understanding inherent in the Silk Roads could pave the way for solutions to modern problems such as economic disparities, cultural conflicts, and environmental challenges.
“The Silk Roads were more than mere trade paths; they were bridges linking diverse peoples and ideas,” Professor Khan noted. “In an increasingly interconnected world, adopting this spirit can enhance international collaboration and promote sustainable development.”
He advocates for initiatives that encourage cultural exchange, educational collaborations, and shared technological advancements among nations. Such efforts, according to Professor Khan, can lead to inclusive growth and a deeper understanding among different societies.
UNESCO’s commitment to preserving the historical legacy of the Silk Roads and promoting their enduring values is seen as a pathway to fostering peace and unity in the modern era. By learning from the past, Professor Khan believes that societies can build a more cooperative and harmonious future.
