China’s 2024 Climate Report Reveals Warmest Nine Years from 2015 to 2023

On Friday, the Joint Laboratory of Climate Change Economics and Simulation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and the Social Sciences Academic Press released the 2024 edition of China’s Annual Report on Actions to Address Climate Change in Beijing.

According to the report, the period from 2015 to 2023 marks the warmest nine years in recorded meteorological history. The report highlighted a concerning trend of increasing natural disasters globally between 1980 and 2023.

In the Chinese mainland, the first 11 months of 2024 witnessed the country’s third-highest precipitation levels in history. Frequent and heavy rainfall affected both northern and southern regions, accompanied by widespread extreme temperatures and frequent typhoons, particularly during the autumn season.

The report urged countries worldwide to strengthen cooperation as the challenges posed by climate change become increasingly severe. It emphasized the need for collective action to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming.

Despite the daunting challenges, the report noted positive developments within China over the past year. Significant progress has been made in sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and green buildings. Mechanisms like carbon emissions trading markets have proved meaningful in promoting carbon reduction.

Additionally, the report highlighted the application of artificial intelligence in relevant fields, observing “relatively good results.” It anticipates that AI will play a crucial role in coping with climate change in the future.

This annual publication, now in its 16th edition, is jointly compiled by experts from CASS and CMA, alongside frontline scholars in China working on climate change-related fields.
