Fish Lantern Festivity Unites Cultures in Huangshan’s Xixinan Ancient Village

The historic streets of Xixinan Ancient Village in Huangshan city, Anhui Province, came alive with light and laughter as a unique fish lantern parade welcomed the New Year. Illuminated lanterns shaped like vibrant fish danced through the village, carried by both local residents and international guests, creating a mesmerizing display of cultural unity.

In 2023, Xixinan township forged a new chapter in its history by signing a cooperation memorandum with Giethoorn, a picturesque village in the Netherlands known as the “Venice of the North.” This partnership aims to foster exchanges in tourism, heritage protection, and cultural communication between the two communities.

To celebrate this budding friendship, Dutch visitors joined hands with local villagers in the fish lantern parade. Under a canopy of fireworks, they danced together, their joyous expressions reflecting the warm glow of the lanterns. The air was filled with music and the aroma of traditional Chinese delicacies, offering an immersive experience of Anhui’s rich heritage.

“It’s incredible to see how traditions can bring people together,” said a Dutch guest participating in the festivities. “Even though we’re from different parts of the world, tonight we are one community celebrating together.”

This event not only highlighted the cultural treasures of Xixinan but also underscored the universal language of celebration and togetherness. As the fish lanterns shimmered against the night sky, they symbolized a bright future of international cooperation and shared heritage between Xixinan and Giethoorn.
