China Urges U.S. to Remove Negative China Content from Defense Bill

China has strongly urged the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological bias, calling for the removal of negative content related to China in the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025.

Xu Dong, spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), expressed China's profound dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the NDAA's provisions targeting China. Speaking on Wednesday, Xu criticized the legislation for “repeatedly hyping up the so-called ‘China threat'”, advocating military support for the Taiwan region, suppressing China's scientific, technological, and economic development, and restricting China-U.S. economic, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.

“The NDAA grossly interferes in China's internal affairs and undermines China's sovereignty, security, and development interests,” Xu stated. He emphasized that China has always approached its relationship with the United States based on principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. “The success of both countries presents an opportunity for each other. We should boost each other's development rather than become obstacles,” he added.

Highlighting the global significance of China-U.S. relations, Xu noted that steady, sound, and sustainable development between the two nations is vital not only to their peoples but also to the future and destiny of humanity. “It is inevitable that China and the United States, as two major countries, will have some differences and disagreements, but they should not undermine each other's core interests, still less engage in conflict and confrontation,” he remarked.

Xu underscored that issues concerning Taiwan, democracy and human rights, China's chosen path and system, and China's right to development are red lines that cannot be challenged. “We strongly urge the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological bias, not to implement the negative articles of the NDAA concerning China, and avoid repeating mistakes on issues concerning China's sovereignty and core interests,” he urged.

Concluding his remarks, Xu asserted that China will take resolute measures in accordance with the law to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests.
