Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the enduring importance of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, calling for its long-term adherence to ensure prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao.
Speaking on Friday at a gathering in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, President Xi underscored the policy’s success over the past quarter-century.
“The great achievements of Macao since its return have proven to the world that ‘One Country, Two Systems’ has prominent institutional strengths and tremendous vitality,” Xi stated.
He highlighted the policy as a cornerstone for maintaining long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, contributing to China’s goal of building a stronger nation and achieving national rejuvenation. “It is a good policy that helps realize peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between different social systems,” he added.
President Xi, who also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, noted that the values embodied in the policy—peace, inclusiveness, openness, and sharing—are shared globally and deserve joint safeguarding.
He urged the new government of the Macao SAR to leverage these institutional advantages and open up new prospects for high-quality development. “To achieve better development of Hong Kong and Macao and make greater contributions to building a stronger country and advancing national rejuvenation is an important mission of the practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in the new era,” Xi emphasized.
The “One Country, Two Systems” framework, which allows Hong Kong and Macao to maintain their own economic and administrative systems while being part of China, has been pivotal in fostering growth and international collaboration in the regions.
