From Macao to Portugal: Wu Family Infuses Cantonese Spirit into Portuguese Wine

When Wu Zhiwei and his wife, Lao Chao Peng, first set foot in Portugal in 2013, they were captivated by the country’s charm. The rolling green vineyards, centuries-old culture, and the warmth of the Portuguese people left an indelible mark on their hearts.

A seasoned entrepreneur from the Macao Special Administrative Region, Wu had built his reputation in the construction industry. He once quipped, “I’m not a wine expert, but if we talk about construction, I can tell you the names of each specific screw.” However, fate had other plans for the Wu family.

During their visit, the couple discovered the historic Quinta da Marmeleira estate, nestled just forty minutes from Lisbon. Enchanted by its 500-year legacy and picturesque vineyards, they saw an opportunity to blend their heritage with Portugal’s rich winemaking traditions.

Seated among the resting December vines, Lao Chao Peng shared their journey. “In 2013, after the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed by President Xi, we came to invest in Portugal,” she said. “We chose here because of the good relations through Macao.”

The Belt and Road Initiative opened new avenues for global collaboration, and the Wu family embraced this vision. By investing in the Quinta da Marmeleira estate, they aimed to bridge cultures and bring a Cantonese accent to Portuguese wine.

Today, the estate stands as a testament to their dream. Blending traditional Portuguese winemaking with influences from their Cantonese roots, the Wu family continues to nurture the estate, keeping its legacy alive while introducing new nuances to its wines.

The Wu family’s journey is more than a business venture; it’s a celebration of cultural exchange and the enduring bonds between Macao and Portugal. Their story is a reminder of how passion and vision can transcend industries, leading to unexpected and rewarding paths.
