In the tranquil landscapes of the Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve in Jiangsu Province, a dedicated group of individuals works tirelessly to protect one of China’s most unique creatures: the milu deer, also known as Pere David’s deer.
Every day, these guardians monitor the health, distribution, and migratory patterns of the milu deer, ensuring their well-being in their natural habitat. Among them is keeper Yu Xiaopeng, affectionately known as the “Deer Manny.” With meticulous care, Yu prepares balanced and nutritious meals for the captive-bred deer, fostering a nurturing environment that mimics their natural diet.
Then there’s Yao Yajun, a ranger who was born and raised in Dafeng. With a deep-rooted connection to the land, Yao follows in the footsteps of his parents, founding members of the reserve. When a call comes in about a deer in danger, Yao and his team spring into action, drawing on years of experience to rescue and rehabilitate each animal.
Their work is not without sacrifices. Rangers like Yao often endure long hours away from their families and face personal risks in their commitment to this noble cause. Yet, the bond they share with the milu deer—formed through years of care and interaction—drives them forward.
