The People’s Republic of China and the United States have agreed to extend their longstanding science and technology cooperation agreement for an additional five years, effective from August 27, 2024, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced last Friday.
At a press conference on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the mutual benefits of the extension. “The essence of China-U.S. scientific and technological cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win,” Lin stated. “This extension is in line with the interests of the people of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community.”
The agreement, one of the first intergovernmental accords signed after the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, has provided robust support for scientific and technological exchanges between the two nations for decades.
“This extension is an important measure to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state,” Lin added. “It will not only promote scientific and technological progress and socio-economic development of both countries but also help both sides address global challenges and improve human well-being around the world.”
Lin expressed hope that the United States would work with China to effectively implement the provisions of the agreement. “We hope that the U.S. will ensure that the results of China-U.S. scientific and technological cooperation truly benefit both countries and the world,” he said.
