São Paulo, Brazil — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva underwent a second surgical procedure on Thursday morning following an emergency brain surgery earlier this week. According to his doctor, Roberto Kalil Filho, the operation was successful, and the president is awake and speaking.
“The procedure was successful. We managed to embolize that artery,” Dr. Kalil told reporters after the hour-long surgery. The medical team at São Paulo’s Sirio-Libanes Hospital performed a middle meningeal artery embolization to minimize the risk of future bleeding.
The president had previously undergone a two-hour surgery on Tuesday to drain bleeding between his brain and the meningeal membrane. The bleeding was linked to a late October fall in a bathroom at the presidential residence. The medical emergency was identified after President Lula complained of a headache while in Brasília on Monday.
“The president is awake and speaking,” Dr. Kalil confirmed, adding that further details would be provided at a press conference scheduled for later in the day.
In a post-surgery news conference on Tuesday, the medical team assured that President Lula had suffered no brain damage. They expect him to be released from the hospital next week.
President Lula’s health has been a focal point of national attention, with many Brazilians expressing concern and support. His recovery is anticipated not only by the citizens but also by international observers, given Brazil’s significant role in global affairs.
