The International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Bahrain witnessed a remarkable showcase of strength from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Ri Chong Song clinched gold in the men’s 81kg division, while compatriot Ri Suk dominated the women’s 64kg category, setting two new world records.
Ri Chong Song’s Triumphant Performance
In a fiercely contested men’s 81kg competition, Ri Chong Song displayed exceptional skill and determination. He secured the snatch gold with a lift of 166kg on his third attempt, narrowly surpassing Uzbekistan’s Mukhammadkodir Toshtemirov, who lifted 165kg, and Kazakhstan’s Alexey Churkin with 164kg.
The battle intensified during the clean and jerk. Churkin momentarily took the lead with a lift of 204kg, bringing his total to a formidable figure. However, the 27-year-old Ri responded with a decisive lift of 205kg, edging ahead by just 1kg to amass a winning total of 371kg. His outstanding performance earned him all three gold medals in the category.
Ri Suk’s Record-Breaking Achievements
On the women’s side, Ri Suk delivered a spectacular performance in the 64kg division. After securing 115kg in the snatch, she moved on to the clean and jerk, where she aimed to make history. Her total weight of 264kg set a new benchmark in the category, reaffirming her status as one of the world’s elite weightlifters. Fellow DPRK athlete Rim Un Sim also shone by taking the snatch gold with a lift of 116kg.
