In an impressive display at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, China secured their sixth consecutive victory by defeating Hong Kong SAR 8-0 on Thursday. This win came swiftly after their earlier triumph over South Korea, solidifying their dominant position in the tournament.
China altered their lineup against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), pairing Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha in the mixed doubles match against Yiu Kwan To and Ng Wing Lam. Marking their first collaboration since the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, Wang and Sun showcased exceptional synergy, overwhelming their opponents with scores of 11-4, 11-6, 11-4.
“I was a little concerned before the match,” Wang shared with reporters following the victory. “During practice, I focused on recalling the details we emphasized when we previously played together. Our performance tonight exceeded my expectations.”
Sun echoed his sentiments, saying, “It had been a long time since we paired at the Paris Olympics. We played well this time.”
In the women’s singles match, Wang Manyu represented China against Doo Hoi Kem. Having last faced each other in the round of 16 at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Cup Finals in Singapore in 2021, where Wang dominated, history repeated itself. Wang, currently ranked world No. 2, secured a swift victory with scores of 11-8, 11-4, 11-2.
Lin Shidong took to the court in the men’s singles match and stood out as the only player on the Chinese team to participate in all six competitions. Demonstrating consistent form, he defeated Chan Baldwin 11-3, 11-4, sealing the comprehensive win for the hosts.
With momentum on their side, China is set to face Japan on Friday, aiming to continue their undefeated streak in the tournament.
