Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s recent visit to China has marked a significant milestone in trans-Himalayan cooperation and has deepened the strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries. During a meeting on December 3 with President Xi Jinping, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and working towards shared prosperity.
President Xi highlighted that China places great importance on its relationship with Nepal, emphasizing the desire to consolidate traditional friendship and advance the China-Nepal strategic partnership of cooperation featuring ever-lasting friendship for development and prosperity. The upcoming 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal next year adds further significance to this commitment.
The two nations share a rich history, with linked mountains and rivers, and parallel aspirations for modernization and prosperity. Their shared cultural heritage serves as a foundation for expanding strategic, trade, and economic cooperation. Nepal’s reaffirmation of the one-China principle and its commitment to not allowing any force to use its territory for activities against China reinforce peace and stability in the region.
During the visit, nine agreements were signed, spanning infrastructure development to trade cooperation. This has elevated bilateral ties to an unprecedented level, reflecting a mutual dedication to building a closer China-Nepal community with a shared future. A joint statement emphasized the countries’ commitment to strengthening coordination and promoting high-quality cooperation. China has pledged $20 million in budgetary support and $41 million in economic and technical assistance to Nepal.
From power grid enhancements to people-to-people exchanges, the areas of mutual interest will continue to drive efforts to advance Nepal’s socioeconomic development. The Pokhara International Airport, deemed Nepal’s “national pride project,” stands as a testament to the joint construction under the Belt and Road Initiative between China and Nepal.
