China Launches Global Initiative to Train 1,300 in Traditional Chinese Medicine

China is embarking on an ambitious journey to train over 1,300 foreign professionals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) within the next three years, according to the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM). This initiative, unveiled at the closing ceremony of the 2024 World Conference on Traditional Medicine in Beijing, aims to strengthen international exchanges and enhance global expertise in TCM.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, a practice developed over millennia, is characterized by its holistic approach to health, emphasizing harmony, individuality, preventative treatment, and simplicity. The NATCM’s program is open to practitioners and managers of traditional medicine, as well as clinical professionals in Western medicine interested in expanding their knowledge of TCM.

At the two-day conference, delegates released a declaration emphasizing the crucial role of traditional medicine in achieving universal health coverage. They highlighted the importance of political commitment and policy support to safely and effectively integrate traditional medicine into existing health systems.

Participants agreed to promote the dissemination of traditional medicine’s concepts, knowledge, and practices. They advocated for developing an international research agenda in traditional medicine and fostering the integration of traditional and modern medical practices.

In a significant move to boost international collaboration, the conference proposed establishing a global federation for traditional medicine groups. This federation aims to strengthen partnerships and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and resources in the field.

Jointly organized by China and the World Health Organization, the event attracted over 3,000 attendees, including government officials, representatives from international organizations, experts, and scholars. The conference featured 129 speeches and reports, alongside 13 exchange and dialogue sessions, marking it as a pivotal moment in the global advancement of traditional medicine.
