December 3 marks the International Day of Disabled Persons, a day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities around the world. In China, efforts are underway to enhance accessibility to cultural products for the visually impaired community, which is estimated to include over 17 million individuals.
In Beijing, a cinema has taken a significant step towards inclusivity by screening audio-described movies specifically designed for visually impaired audiences. These films feature additional narration that describes visual elements such as scenes, actions, expressions, and settings, allowing listeners to fully experience and understand the storyline.
CGTN reporter Guo Tianqi visited the cinema to witness firsthand how these audio-described movies are enriching the lives of visually impaired individuals. The screenings not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of community and inclusion.
One attendee shared, “Listening to the detailed descriptions helps me visualize the movie in my mind. It’s like being part of the story.”
The initiative reflects China’s broader commitment to improving accessibility and promoting equal opportunities for people with disabilities. By expanding the availability of audio-described movies and other accessible cultural products, China is working to ensure that everyone can participate in and enjoy the richness of its cultural offerings.
