As the second phase of the 2024-25 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season tips off on Wednesday, all eyes are on the Xinjiang Flying Tigers as they visit the Shenzhen Leopards. With the league’s second-best record from the first stage, the Flying Tigers are poised to ascend even higher, bolstered by the return of several key players.
Embracing a Unique Team Culture
Since claiming the CBA title in 2017, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers have undergone significant changes. While many from that championship-winning squad have moved on, captain and reigning MVP Abdusalam Abdurexiti remains a steadfast pillar of the team. He attributes the team’s enduring success to its distinctive culture.
“I think club culture is key, especially considering our unique geographic location and team composition,” Abdusalam told CGTN Sports Scene’s Damion Jones. “We are the only CBA club representing the five northwest provinces and regions, and we have the most ethnic minority players in the entire league. This creates a distinct element for our team and is a major reason for our special identity.”
Championing Diversity
At its peak, the Flying Tigers’ roster comprised up to 40% ethnic minority players, a figure that currently stands at around 30%. This diversity is not just a statistic but a source of pride and strength for the team. Club president Guo Jian emphasizes that the spirit of Xinjiang basketball reflects the mindset of the region’s native population, embodied in the local phrase “Lao Dao.”
“In Xinjiang, ‘Lao Dao’ is a sacred term that symbolizes courage, determination, positivity, and perseverance,” Guo explained. “It embodies the spirit of the people of Xinjiang and is a core value at our club. While the ultimate goal is the championship, the team focuses equally on building a fearless and determined squad with a tough, fighting spirit. This is the foundation of the club’s culture. Rooted deeply in Xinjiang, the team believes its goals will be realized, leading the people and fans of Xinjiang to embrace and enjoy the journey of ‘Lao Dao.'”
Aspiring for Greater Heights
From humble beginnings to becoming a formidable force in the CBA, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers have showcased not only their basketball prowess but also their relentless pursuit of success. Representing the pride of the Xinjiang region, they continue to write new chapters in their story through effort, perseverance, and teamwork.
As they face the Shenzhen Leopards, the Flying Tigers carry with them the hopes and dreams of their fans. With the ‘Lao Dao’ spirit guiding them, they are not just playing to win but to inspire and uplift the entire region.
