A Taste of Kashi: How Dili and Diya are Brewing Cultural Connections

In the heart of Kashi, an ancient city in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a unique coffee aroma fills the air. At a quaint coffee shop nestled among the bustling streets, Dili and Diya, a husband-and-wife duo, are brewing more than just coffee—they’re blending cultures.

Dili, a native of Kashi, and Diya, hailing from Tanzania, met halfway across the world but found common ground in their passion for coffee and community. A couple of years ago, they decided to return to Dili’s hometown, bringing with them a fusion of their rich heritages and a dream to create a space where flavors and stories converge.

Their coffee shop has become a local haven, attracting passersby with its warm atmosphere and the enticing scent of freshly brewed blends. The menu reflects a marriage of traditions—from Xinjiang’s local ingredients to Tanzanian coffee beans, each cup tells a story of connection and diversity.

Recently, CGTN’s Nadim Diab joined forces with Dili and Diya, embarking on a mission to craft a coffee that captures the essence of Kashi. After spending a week immersed in the city’s history and culture, Nadim experimented with local spices and brewing techniques under the couple’s guidance.

“Creating this coffee was about understanding what makes Kashi unique,” Nadim shared. “Dili and Diya helped me see the city through their eyes—a place where different cultures meet and blend seamlessly.”

The culmination of their efforts was put to the test as Nadim presented his creation to the locals. Curious residents gathered, eager to taste this new brew that promised to encapsulate the spirit of their city. The reactions were a mix of surprise and delight, as familiar flavors danced with unexpected twists.

For Dili and Diya, the experience was a reaffirmation of their belief in the power of sharing and collaboration. “Our goal has always been to bring people together,” Diya said with a smile. “Coffee is just the beginning; it’s a medium to connect stories, traditions, and hearts.”

As the sun set over Kashi, the coffee shop buzzed with conversations in multiple languages, laughter, and the clinking of cups—testament to the vibrant tapestry of cultures that Dili and Diya continue to weave together, one cup at a time.
