The 2024 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit successfully concluded on Friday in Wuzhen, east China’s Zhejiang Province, bringing together participants from over 130 countries and regions both online and in person.

Under the theme of “Embracing a People-centered and AI-for-good Digital Future – Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace,” the summit focused on artificial intelligence (AI), addressing global concerns about AI development and governance. The event highlighted the potential of AI and digital technologies to benefit humanity and shape a better digital future for all.

Throughout the summit, a series of signature events took place, including the demonstration of practice cases of “Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace,” the Light of Internet Expo, and other brand activities. These events showcased cutting-edge technologies and fostered discussions on the future of the internet.

Introducing Four New Initiatives

This year’s summit introduced four significant new initiatives aimed at enhancing global cooperation in the digital realm.

The newly established WIC Distinguished Contribution Award was launched to honor individuals and enterprises that have made outstanding contributions to the global internet sector. The award aims to encourage collective efforts to promote the flourishing development of the internet industry, ensuring that more countries and people can share in the benefits of internet progress. At the award ceremony during the summit’s opening, seven individuals and fourteen enterprises were recognized for their remarkable achievements.

The summit also announced the formation of the WIC Specialized Committee on Artificial Intelligence, expected to serve as an international platform for AI cooperation and exchange. This committee will facilitate collaborations among global stakeholders to address challenges and opportunities in AI development.

Another key initiative was the launch of the WIC Think Tank Cooperation Program, initiated by 60 think tanks from WIC member organizations and leading international think tanks in the internet field. The program aims to establish a long-term platform for academic exchange and intellectual dialogue, fostering deeper understanding and collaboration on internet development and governance.

The establishment of the WIC Digital Academy was also announced. The academy will host the WIC Global Elite Training program, providing education and training opportunities to nurture talents in the digital economy and internet industries.

Release of Key Internet Development Reports

Additionally, the summit released two significant reports showcasing important achievements in the development of the internet: the China Internet Development Report 2024 and the World Internet Development Report 2024. These reports provide in-depth analysis and insights into the trends, challenges, and opportunities in the global internet landscape.

The 2024 WIC Wuzhen Summit reinforced the commitment of the international community to embrace a people-centered approach and champion AI for good, building a community with a shared future in cyberspace. As the digital age continues to evolve, such collaborative efforts are crucial in ensuring that technological advancements benefit all of humanity.
