Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of viewing and developing China-Germany relations from a long-term and strategic perspective during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The leaders met on the sidelines of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
President Xi noted that since Chancellor Scholz’s visit to China in April, both countries have seen significant progress in cooperation across various sectors, including green development, sustainable transportation, and agricultural projects in Africa. He stated that bilateral relations have gained new strength and vitality.
“As the second- and third-largest economies in the world, China and Germany hold significant influence,” Xi said. “We need to strengthen our comprehensive strategic partnership from a long-term and strategic perspective.”
He emphasized China’s stable and consistent policy toward Germany, expressing willingness to work together based on mutual respect for core interests and major concerns. Xi called for both nations to seek common ground while reserving differences and to promote mutual learning through exchanges.
Highlighting the deep economic interdependence between the two nations, Xi stated that cooperation represents opportunities for shared development. “China regards Germany as an important partner in advancing Chinese modernization and will continue to provide German companies with broad market opportunities,” he said.
Xi proposed that both sides focus on digitalization, intelligent technologies, and low-carbon development to upgrade and enhance cooperation. He also suggested exploring third-party markets to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.
“China views Europe as a significant pole in a multipolar world and is committed to collaborating with Europe to address challenges and promote stable and healthy development of relations between China and Europe,” Xi added.
Regarding the European Union’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation. He expressed hope that Germany will continue to play a key role in this process.
