As the Ukraine crisis reaches its 1,000th day, China has reiterated its call for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and negotiation. During a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, Chinese envoy Geng Shuang urged all parties to support efforts towards peace talks and create favorable conditions for reconciliation.
“Ground battles have intensified the humanitarian crisis and exacerbated spillover effects worldwide,” said Geng, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN. He emphasized the growing global demand for peace and called on conflicting parties to initiate discussions at the earliest opportunity.
The meeting was convened to mark the somber milestone in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, provided a briefing that highlighted the severe toll of the conflict. She underscored significant civilian casualties, widespread destruction, and the persistent humanitarian crisis, noting that the protection of civilians must remain a priority for all parties.
DiCarlo also expressed concern over the risk of a nuclear incident resulting from military activities near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. She warned of the potentially catastrophic consequences and called for an immediate end to hostilities, reaffirming the UN’s readiness to support a durable and comprehensive peace process.
Geng reaffirmed China’s consistent stance on the Ukraine issue, stating that China has always advocated for peace and dialogue. “Since the conflict began, China has emphasized the importance of respecting all nations’ sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. Geng highlighted China’s active communication with both Russia and Ukraine, its engagement in shuttle diplomacy, and its efforts to promote a political solution through dialogue.
In response to accusations made by the U.S. representative during the meeting, Geng dismissed the claims as baseless. He pointed to the significant role of the United States in the crisis, adding that achieving a ceasefire and political resolution largely depends on the U.S.’s actions and attitude. Geng expressed hope that the U.S. would act responsibly and in a manner that withstands historical scrutiny.
China’s call for a peaceful resolution reflects its broader approach to international conflicts, emphasizing diplomacy and mutual respect. The international community is watching closely as efforts continue to find a path toward peace in Ukraine.
As the conflict endures, the call for dialogue becomes increasingly urgent. The UN and member states like China are advocating for immediate actions to alleviate humanitarian suffering and promote a sustainable peace process.
