China and Peru Collaborate on Chancay Port to Boost Asia-Latin America Trade

China and Peru have pledged to work together to ensure the success of the Chancay Port project, from construction through to management and operation, according to Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Friday.

Speaking at a daily press briefing, Lin Jian announced that the presidents of both China and Peru attended the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port via video link on November 14 in Lima. The event marks a significant milestone in the Belt and Road cooperation between the two nations.

“Chancay Port is not only an important project under Belt and Road cooperation but also the first smart and green port in South America,” Lin noted.

The first phase of the project, once completed, is expected to reduce sea shipping time from Peru to China to 23 days, cutting logistics costs by at least 20%. It is projected to generate $4.5 billion in annual revenues for Peru and create over 8,000 direct jobs.

Lin emphasized that the completion of Chancay Port will solidify Peru’s role as a gateway linking shipping routes between Asia and Latin America, boosting overall development and integration within Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region.

The port’s development plan also includes initiatives to improve the local environment, such as establishing animal rescue services and enhancing wetlands, beaches, and habitats, contributing to the sustainable development of the local economy and society.

“Chancay Port is becoming a starting point of an Inca Trail of the New Era,” Lin said. “From Chancay to Shanghai, it is witnessing the emergence of a new route across land and ocean between Asia and LAC.”

China is committed to following the guidance of the common understandings between the two presidents and working with Peru to ensure the success of Chancay Port. The project aims to empower the common development of Pacific coastal economies, including China and Peru, and contribute to the prosperity and happiness of Peru and all other LAC countries, Lin added.
