China’s Ministry of National Defense has called on the Philippines to return to the path of dialogue and consultation to resolve disputes in the South China Sea. On Friday, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang urged the Philippines to cease spreading false narratives and refrain from unilateral actions that may escalate tensions.
In response to recent provocative comments and acts by the Philippine side, Zhang stated that the Philippines, in collusion with external countries, has carried out frequent military exercises in the South China Sea. He emphasized that these activities disrupt peace and stability in the area and undermine the interests and well-being of people in the region.
The spokesperson highlighted that the Philippine side has attempted to solidify what he termed an illegal arbitral award on the South China Sea through domestic legislation. Zhang noted that such acts severely violate China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and harm other countries’ rights to navigation and shipping. “The Chinese side firmly opposes this,” he added.
Zhang asserted that the Chinese military will take strong and resolute measures to safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. He pledged to counter infringements and provocations and to uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea.
