In a promising development for wildlife conservation, the population of brown eared pheasants—a bird species under first-class national protection in China—is steadily increasing in Shanxi Province. A recent two-year survey by the province has revealed not only a rise in their numbers but also an expansion in their distribution areas.
The survey estimates that there are approximately 19,000 brown eared pheasants now residing in Shanxi. These rare birds are currently distributed across four major geographical areas, including the Lyuliang Mountain and Taihang Mountain regions. Their habitat now spans 45 counties and districts within eight cities of the province, indicating a significant expansion from previous years.
The brown eared pheasant’s growing population is a positive sign of the effectiveness of conservation efforts in the region. The species’ increased numbers and wider distribution suggest that their habitats are being preserved and that ecological conditions are improving.
