China Announces Standard Names for Islands and Reefs in South China Sea

China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on Sunday the standard geographical names for several islands and reefs in the South China Sea.

The announcement includes 64 names, among which are Houteng Xidao, Ren’ai Nanjiao, and Ren’ai Beijiao. This move aims to standardize geographical nomenclature and enhance navigation and maritime communication in the region.

The South China Sea is a vital waterway for international trade and holds significant strategic and economic importance. The standardization of these names is expected to facilitate better understanding and cooperation among seafarers, researchers, and international stakeholders.

Authorities emphasized that the standardized names will be used in official maps, documents, and publications, promoting consistency and clarity in geographical references.
