China and EU Engage in Intensive Talks on EV Price Commitments

China and the European Union (EU) are currently engaged in intensive consultations over the details of price commitments concerning Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), according to a spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry on Thursday.

He Yongqian made the remarks at a press conference in response to questions about the EU’s imposition of tariffs on EVs from China. He noted that an EU technical team arrived in Beijing on November 2 to advance the discussions.

“Currently, both parties are engaged in intensive negotiations on the specific details of the price commitments, following the principles of pragmatism and balance,” he said.

On October 25, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Commission Executive Vice President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis held a video call. They reaffirmed their commitment to resolving differences through dialogue and agreed to continue utilizing price commitments as a solution to the EU’s anti-subsidy case against Chinese EVs.

Subsequently, on October 29, the EU announced its decision to impose definitive countervailing duties of up to 35.3 percent on EVs from China for five years. Despite this, the EU indicated its willingness to continue consultations with China on the price commitments.

In response, on November 4, China appealed to the World Trade Organization against the EU’s final ruling on the countervailing measures.
