Duma Boko Sworn In as Botswana’s 6th President, Pledges Economic Diversification

The newly elected president, Duma Boko, was officially sworn in as the 6th president of Botswana on Friday by Chief Justice Terrence Rannowane at the High Court.

In a ceremony marked by solemnity and hope, Boko took the oath of office without delay. Addressing the nation on Botswana Television after the inauguration, he emphasized the urgency of assuming leadership promptly, stating that any hesitation would leave the country without a leader.

“It is imperative that we move forward swiftly to address the challenges facing our nation,” Boko declared. “Delaying the oath would have left a void in leadership, and our people deserve better.”

The new president pledged to “hit the ground running” in exploring strategies to diversify Botswana’s economy, which has long been heavily reliant on diamond sales. Recognizing the vulnerabilities of a single-resource economy, Boko outlined his vision for a more resilient and inclusive economic future.

“We must expand our horizons beyond diamonds,” he said. “By investing in other sectors and fostering innovation, we can create sustainable growth and prosperity for all citizens.”

Boko’s inauguration marks a significant moment in Botswana’s history, as the nation looks toward a future of economic diversification and development under new leadership.
