In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji has called for deepening the traditional friendship and all-round practical cooperation with Zambia. Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting in Beijing with Nelly Mutti, Speaker of Zambia’s National Assembly, Zhao emphasized China’s readiness to build an even closer China-Zambia community with a shared future.
Zhao, who serves as the chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, highlighted the importance of implementing the consensus reached by the two nations’ heads of state. As the two countries mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties, he suggested leveraging this milestone to synergize China’s high-quality Belt and Road Initiative with Zambia’s eighth national development plan.
Noting the pivotal role of legislative exchanges, Zhao expressed the NPC’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Zambia’s National Assembly across various levels and fields. He underscored the need to deepen political mutual trust and firmly support each other to further solidify the political foundation of bilateral relations. Zhao also thanked Zambia for its firm support on issues concerning China’s core interests and major concerns.
Emphasizing legislative collaboration, Zhao proposed promoting the promulgation and revision of relevant legal documents to provide legal guarantees for practical cooperation. He also called for active promotion of international cooperation, enhanced coordination in multilateral mechanisms, and joint efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change.
On her part, Speaker Nelly Mutti acknowledged China as a trustworthy partner and expressed willingness to deepen cooperation in various fields. She affirmed that Zambia’s National Assembly is keen to strengthen communication and cooperation with the NPC on multilateral occasions and to play an active role in advancing Zambia-China relations.
The meeting signifies a mutual commitment to implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Both sides agreed to advance relevant work steadily to ensure early and fruitful results.
