Slivered Onions Blamed for McDonald’s E. coli Outbreak in U.S.

The United States is grappling with an E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions used by McDonald’s, according to health authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Wednesday that fresh, slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders and other menu items are the likely source of the outbreak that has sickened 90 people.

These onions were supplied by Taylor Farms, which has issued a voluntary recall. In response, McDonald’s has pulled the onions from its stores. Restaurants in twelve U.S. states temporarily removed the popular burgers from their menus amid concerns over the outbreak.

The number of people affected has risen to 90, with 27 individuals requiring hospitalization. Tragically, an elderly man in Colorado has died. The E. coli bacterium responsible for the outbreak can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting lasting three to four days. While most people recover without treatment, some may develop serious complications.

Despite the severity of the situation, McDonald’s announced on Sunday that it would resume selling its Quarter Pounder hamburgers after tests for E. coli came back negative. The company is working closely with suppliers and health officials to ensure the safety of its products.

The outbreak highlights the importance of food safety protocols and supply chain vigilance. As investigations continue, consumers are urged to stay informed and exercise caution.
