Over 100 Nations Back China Against Politicization of Human Rights at UN Assembly

At the Third Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, over 100 countries voiced their support for the Chinese mainland’s stance against the politicization of human rights.

In response to accusations regarding China’s human rights record made by a few Western nations, Ambassador Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, firmly opposed and rejected these claims. He emphasized that the human rights situation most in need of attention is undoubtedly Gaza.

Pakistan, on behalf of 80 countries, delivered a joint statement highlighting that issues related to Xinjiang and Xizang are internal affairs of the Chinese mainland. They opposed interference in internal affairs under the pretext of human rights and advocated for respecting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including each nation’s right to independently choose a development path suited to its national conditions.

An additional 20-plus countries, individually or collectively, expressed support for China and opposition to the politicization of human rights issues and the application of double standards.

Ambassador Fu also delivered a joint statement on behalf of 28 countries, denouncing the indiscriminate use of unilateral coercive measures by some Western nations. He underscored that such measures violate the UN Charter and international law, cause damaging consequences to sanctioned countries and their peoples, and seriously infringe upon all human rights, including the rights to health and life. He called for their immediate and complete cancellation.

As the main committee dealing with human rights and social development, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly witnessed strong support for China’s position. The collective stance of over 100 member states demonstrates the international community’s true sentiment, highlighting the failure of a handful of Western countries, including Australia and the United States, to manipulate human rights issues for political purposes.
