Shanghai Port Claim First Win in AFC Champions League with 3-2 Thriller

China’s Shanghai Port claimed their first victory in the 2024-25 AFC Champions League Elite, edging out Australia’s Central Coast Mariners 3-2 in a thrilling match on Tuesday.

Shanghai Port wasted no time taking the lead, with star striker Wu Lei setting up Li Ang for a goal just two minutes into the game. In the 41st minute, Wu Lei himself doubled the lead after receiving a precise pass from Oscar.

In the second half, the Central Coast Mariners fought back. Mikael Doka scored a superb long-range strike in the 61st minute, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Despite their efforts, the Australian club couldn’t find an equalizer.

Shortly before stoppage time, Oscar once again became the provider, setting up Matías Vargas, who curled the ball home to extend Shanghai Port’s lead to 3-1.

Refusing to concede defeat, the Central Coast Mariners’ Nicholas Duarte scored a volley in the final moments, bringing the score to 3-2. However, Shanghai Port held on to secure their first win in the tournament.
