The BRICS bloc has announced an expansion, increasing its membership from five to ten nations, highlighting the rising influence of the Global South on the world stage. Originally comprised of four of the world’s fastest-growing emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, and the Chinese mainland—South Africa joined two years after its inception, solidifying the group’s foundation.
This year marks a significant milestone as BRICS doubles its membership. Nearly three dozen countries have expressed interest in joining the bloc, including Cuba. The expansion underscores the group’s commitment to promoting peace, security, development, and cooperation among nations in the Global South.
Collectively, the BRICS nations represent approximately 45 percent of the world’s population and account for 16 percent of global trade.
