China Urges U.S. to Stop Sending Wrong Signals to ‘Taiwan Independence’ Forces

China has called on the United States to refrain from sending erroneous signals to “Taiwan independence” forces, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the one-China principle and maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.

During a regular press briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the U.S. She stated, “If the U.S. truly cares about peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and the prosperity of the region, it should adhere to the one-China principle and stop arming Taiwan.”

The remarks came in response to comments from the U.S. State Department regarding the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s recent “Joint Sword-2024B” military drills surrounding the island of Taiwan. The Eastern Theater Command of the PLA conducted these exercises, involving troops from the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, in the Taiwan Straits and areas to the north, south, and east of the island.

The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command described the drills as a “powerful deterrent” against separatist activities by “Taiwan independence” elements, asserting that they are legitimate and necessary actions to safeguard national sovereignty and unity. Mao Ning echoed this sentiment, stating, “Taiwan independence and cross-Straits peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. The provocations from the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces will inevitably be met with countermeasures.”

Emphasizing China’s commitment to regional peace and stability, Mao added that this stance is evident to neighboring countries. She reaffirmed that Taiwan is part of China and that the Taiwan question is a domestic affair that brooks no foreign interference.

Mao Ning called on the United States to act on its leaders’ commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence,” to stop arming Taiwan, and to cease sending any erroneous signals to separatist forces. “The U.S. should stop sending wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces,” she urged.
