Vientiane, Laos—As the 44th and 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits unfold from October 9 to October 11 in the heart of Laos, voices from the region underscore the transformative potential of regional integration.
Thanousone Phonamat, vice-president of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized that deeper integration within ASEAN, along with the Belt and Road Initiative, presents significant opportunities for technology transfer and human resource development.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summits, Phonamat highlighted the benefits that regional collaboration brings to the member nations, particularly in boosting economic growth and enhancing competitiveness.
“Regional integration allows us to leverage shared resources and expertise,” he said. “Through initiatives like the Belt and Road, we can accelerate infrastructure development, improve connectivity, and foster innovation across ASEAN.”
The summits in Vientiane bring together leaders and stakeholders from across Southeast Asia to discuss pressing issues and chart a course for the future of the region. Topics such as economic cooperation, sustainable development, and technological advancement are at the forefront of the agenda.
Phonamat noted that harnessing these opportunities requires a concerted effort to develop human capital. “Investing in our people is crucial,” he stated. “We need to focus on education and skills training to fully realize the benefits of these initiatives.”
As ASEAN continues to navigate global challenges, the emphasis on regional integration and cooperation signals a commitment to collective progress and prosperity.
