Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Ice Hockey Tournament Begins in Harbin

Harbin City, renowned for its icy landscapes, is set to host an exhilarating ice hockey tournament bringing together members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Starting this Saturday, the three-day event will feature teams from China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, showcasing their prowess on the ice in a series of six matches.

The matches will take place at the historic Harbin Ice Hockey Arena, a venue that gained prominence during the 1996 Asian Winter Games. Fans can look forward to robust line-ups, including the home team Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star and Kazakhstan’s Almaty Hockey League, promising an exciting display of skill and competition.

This tournament is part of the SCO’s initiative to enhance winter sports exchanges among its member states, fostering cooperation and cultural ties through athletic engagement.

Established in 2001, the SCO is an inter-governmental organisation comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, aimed at promoting regional peace and development. It has since expanded to include nine member states, three observer states, and 14 dialogue partners.

In July 2024, the SCO held its summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, setting the stage for China to host next year’s meeting.

By bringing together athletes and fans from across the region, the SCO ice hockey tournament not only highlights the growing popularity of winter sports in Asia but also underscores the organisation’s commitment to strengthening regional bonds.
