The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Thursday that two of its peacekeepers were wounded when Israeli forces fired upon UN positions in the country’s south.
“This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall,” UNIFIL said in a statement.
The incident occurred when the IDF targeted an observation tower at UNIFIL’s Naqoura headquarters. The force also reported that Israeli military actions hit two other UN positions.
UNIFIL reminded “the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times.”
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding the incident.
