Today marks World Mental Health Day, an international observance dedicated to raising awareness and promoting education about mental health issues. In honor of this day, Dr Xu Lin, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, shared her insights on the importance of providing holistic care to patients.
“Understanding a patient’s psychological needs is crucial,” Dr Xu told CGTN. “It not only improves their treatment experience but also contributes significantly to their overall well-being.” She noted that patients often feel they are losing control of their lives due to the disruptions brought on by illness.
Dr Xu emphasized the need for doctors and family members to build a strong support system at home. “Focusing on small, manageable goals can help patients and families cope with long-term conditions more effectively,” she explained. By breaking down challenges into achievable tasks, patients can regain a sense of control and empowerment.
Her insights highlight the growing recognition of mental health’s role in physical healing. As the global community observes World Mental Health Day, Dr Xu’s perspective serves as a reminder of the profound impact that holistic care can have on patients’ lives.
