Freedom of Navigation in the South China Sea Fully Guaranteed, Report Finds

The freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea is fully guaranteed for both military and civilian vessels and aircraft, according to a research report released by the South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative (SCSPI).

Yan Yan, deputy director of SCSPI, emphasized that the region remains open and accessible, countering narratives that suggest otherwise. “The so-called freedom of navigation espoused by the U.S. is essentially a theory that disregards the interests of coastal states in favor of protecting its own national interests,” she stated.

The report sheds light on the complexities surrounding freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, a vital maritime route that supports significant global trade. It highlights that while navigation rights are protected, they must also respect the sovereignty and security of the coastal states.

Experts believe that misinterpretations and unilateral actions can lead to unnecessary tensions in the region. The SCSPI report calls for cooperative efforts to ensure that the South China Sea remains a zone of peace and stability, benefiting all nations involved.
