In the heart of the Khan Younis refugee camp, laughter and melodies rise above the distant echoes of turmoil. Among the tents and temporary shelters, musician Fehmi Al Saqqa strums his oud, his fingers weaving notes that bring solace to those around him. For the children gathered, these moments offer a brief escape from the harsh realities that surround them.
Originally from Al-Rimal in Gaza City, Fehmi was evacuated to Khan Younis following the outbreak of fighting on October 7, 2023. The conflict forced many like him to leave their homes in search of safety. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, Fehmi chose to share his gift of music with those who needed it most.
“Music has the power to heal wounds that are unseen,” Fehmi says, his eyes reflecting both sorrow and hope. “These children have seen and heard things no one should ever have to. If I can help them forget their fears, even for a moment, then I have done something worthwhile.”
Every day, Fehmi gathers the children under a makeshift canopy. With limited resources, he teaches them songs of peace and resilience. The children’s voices, at first reluctant and soft, grow stronger with each session. Their smiles return, illuminating faces that have witnessed too much sorrow.
The camp’s residents have noticed the change. Parents express gratitude for the positive influence on their children. “My son couldn’t sleep at night,” one mother shares. “But now, he sings himself to sleep with the songs Fehmi taught him.”
Despite the constant attacks and uncertainty, Fehmi remains committed to his mission. He believes that music can be a beacon of hope amid darkness. “We cannot control what happens around us, but we can choose how we respond. I choose to respond with music and love.”
As the sun sets over Khan Younis, the sounds of singing continue, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through his dedication, Fehmi not only helps the children overcome their fears but also strengthens the bonds of a community striving to find peace within itself.
