Shenzhou-18 Crew Captures Space Views of China’s Mother Rivers

The crew of China’s Shenzhou-18 mission has recently shared breathtaking images of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River from their perspective aboard the Tiangong space station. These two rivers, often referred to as China’s “mother rivers,” hold profound cultural and historical significance for the nation.

Commander Ye Guangfu was the first to showcase the majestic Yangtze River, China’s longest waterway and the third longest river in the world. From their orbital vantage point, the taikonauts captured stunning views of the river winding through the landscape, connecting major cities such as Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai. “It’s incredible to see how this river has shaped our country’s geography and urban development,” Ye remarked.

Fellow crew member Li Cong shared images of the Yellow River, China’s second longest river. The Yellow River traverses diverse terrains, linking the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the Loess Plateau, and the arid plains of northern China. From space, the river’s path reveals its vital role in supporting ecosystems, combating desertification, and supplying water through extensive conservation projects. “Viewing the Yellow River from space gives us a new appreciation for its importance to our nation’s environment and people,” Li noted.

The Shenzhou-18 mission, which has been in orbit for nearly six months, continues to provide valuable insights into Earth observation and space exploration. The crew is scheduled to return to Earth in late October, bringing with them a wealth of scientific data and a renewed perspective on China’s natural wonders.
