Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China – The inaugural segment of China’s West-East Gas Pipeline 4 commenced operations on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s endeavor to enhance its regional energy network and promote a green, low-carbon energy transition along the pipeline’s extensive route.
This newly operational segment, located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is designed to transport an impressive 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. According to Wang Xinsheng, Production Manager of PipeChina West Pipeline Company, the first section integrates seamlessly with the existing network, boosting the system’s total annual transmission capacity to a staggering 92 billion cubic meters.
The entire pipeline stretches from Wuqia County in Xinjiang to Zhongwei City in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, covering a total length of 1,745 kilometers. The newly operational 583-kilometer stretch connects Turpan to Hami, serving as a critical conduit for clean energy distribution across the region.
Innovative technology played a pivotal role in the construction process. The use of pipes with extra-large diameters enhances seismic resilience in areas characterized by complex geography, ensuring stability and safety. Additionally, the implementation of digital radiography has improved monitoring efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
The pipeline’s stations and valve rooms are equipped with solar power systems, exemplifying the project’s commitment to sustainability. These systems are projected to save 360,000 kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 362 tonnes each year.
This ambitious project is set to bolster Xinjiang’s oil and gas industry significantly. By supplying clean energy to areas along the route, it not only contributes to environmental preservation but also stimulates local economies, offering new opportunities for development and growth.
