At least 38 people have been killed in Nepal since early Friday as continuous heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding and landslides, officials said on Saturday. The persistent downpours have closed major roads and disrupted domestic air travel across the country.
The death toll is feared to rise, with another 29 people reported missing over the last 30 hours, authorities added. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials work to locate the missing and provide aid to affected communities.
Most of the deaths have occurred in the Kathmandu Valley, the densely populated area that includes the nation’s capital and is home to four million people. The flooding has brought traffic and normal activity to a standstill in the area, severely impacting daily life.
