In 2010, fresh out of university, Lai Xuanzhi began his journey as a physical education teacher at Qixing Primary School in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. Little did he know that his passion for jump rope would not only transform his life but also elevate his students to international acclaim.
Under Lai’s dedicated mentorship, the school’s jump rope team has soared to remarkable heights. They have produced 39 world champions and shattered 18 world records, putting their once-rural school on the global map. For Lai, jump rope is more than just a sport; it’s a vehicle for his students to “leap” beyond their rural origins, instilling confidence and igniting dreams.
“I believe that through jump rope, my students can see a world beyond their hometown,” Lai shared. “It gives them the confidence to pursue their dreams and shows them that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.”
The impact of Lai’s coaching extends beyond medals and records. His students have gained exposure to new cultures and experiences, traveling internationally to compete and showcase their talents. This exposure has broadened their horizons, inspiring them to aim higher in all aspects of life.
One of his students, Li Ming, recalled, “Before joining the jump rope team, I never imagined leaving our town. Now, I’ve performed in front of audiences around the world. Coach Lai showed us that our potential is limitless.”
Lai’s innovative training methods and unwavering commitment have not only redefined physical education at Qixing Primary School but have also become a source of pride for the community. Parents and educators alike have witnessed the positive transformation in the students, both physically and mentally.
As Lai continues to nurture young talent, he remains humble about his achievements. “It’s not just about breaking records,” he said. “It’s about helping my students find their path, giving them the tools to succeed, and watching them leap towards their future.”
