At the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Nauruan Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Lionel Aingimea. The meeting marked a significant step in the strengthening of diplomatic relations between China and the Pacific island nation of Nauru.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted that the resumption of diplomatic ties in January this year has opened a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. He emphasized China’s commitment to enhancing communication and exchanges with Nauru at all levels based on equality and mutual respect.
“China attaches great importance to its relationship with Nauru,” Wang said. “We are keen on actively expanding practical cooperation to continuously advance bilateral relations.”
Lionel Aingimea expressed optimism about the burgeoning partnership, describing the resumption of diplomatic ties with China as a “correct and historic decision.” He voiced hope for continued cooperation in various fields to support Nauru’s economic and social development.
“Strengthening our cooperation with China will significantly contribute to the progress of Nauru,” Aingimea stated.
The meeting underscored both nations’ intentions to foster a collaborative relationship that benefits their peoples and contributes to regional stability and prosperity.
