Han Dynasty’s Hidden Wealth: Gold Treasures of Marquis of Haihun Displayed in Nanchang

In Nanchang, east China’s Jiangxi Province, a remarkable trove of ancient treasures has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the opulent life of a brief-reigning Han Dynasty emperor. The treasures, excavated from the tomb of the Marquis of Haihun, include an astounding 115 kilograms of gold artifacts, surpassing the combined gold findings of all other Han Dynasty tombs in China.

The Marquis of Haihun, Liu He (92-59 BC), was the grandson of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC-25 AD). Despite his reign as emperor lasting a mere 27 days before being deposed by powerful ministers, his tomb reveals the grandeur and wealth he maintained. After his overthrow, Liu He was exiled to Haihun—modern-day Nanchang—and granted the title Haihunhou.

Currently on display at the Nanchang Relic Museum for Haihun Principality of the Han Dynasty, the treasures include over 10,000 cultural relics. Among these are genuine horse-drawn carriages and a record-breaking 478 gold objects. The exhibition allows visitors to step back in time and witness the lavishness of the Western Han period.

The sheer volume of gold artifacts found at the site is unprecedented. Experts believe that the number of gold items unearthed from Liu He’s tomb exceeds those discovered in all other Han Dynasty tombs across China combined. This extraordinary find not only highlights the wealth of the period but also provides invaluable insights into the cultural and historical context of the time.

The excavation and exhibition of these treasures have attracted global attention, drawing historians, researchers, and tourists eager to explore this significant chapter of Chinese history. The discoveries continue to shed light on the complexities of imperial life, the political dynamics of the Han Dynasty, and the enduring legacy of its rulers.
