Beijing, October 26—In a firm statement on Thursday, a Chinese spokesperson called on the United States to halt its arms sales to China's Taiwan region and to cease sending "erroneous signals" to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan independence.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, addressed concerns regarding recent U.S. plans to sell weapons to Taiwan. "We urge the U.S. side to immediately stop arming China's Taiwan region and sending erroneous signals to separatist forces advocating for 'Taiwan independence,' and honor its commitment of not supporting 'Taiwan independence' with concrete actions," Chen emphasized.
Chen highlighted that the United States has repeatedly sold arms to China's Taiwan region, actions that "seriously violate the three China-U.S. joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique." He added that such actions "seriously infringe China's sovereignty and security interests."
The spokesperson noted that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed strong opposition to these sales and has announced sanctions on nine U.S. military industrial companies involved in the arms deals.
Addressing the actions of the Taiwan authorities, led by Lai Ching-te, Chen stated that they have been escalating "confrontation and hostility across the Taiwan Strait." He warned that the military buildup by the Taiwan authorities "will only lead to their own destruction."
Chen affirmed China's resolve in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. "China has full confidence and sufficient capabilities to smash 'Taiwan independence' provocations and external interference," he declared.
