Armenia Poised to Embrace EU Membership Opportunity, Says PM Pashinyan
At the Global Armenian Summit on Wednesday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that Armenia would not miss any chance to join the European Union (EU), highlighting a significant shift in the nation’s foreign policy trajectory.
“We will not let the opportunity to join the EU slip away,” Pashinyan stated emphatically. “However, this is not solely a unilateral or bilateral action. We must tread carefully to avoid disappointing our people.”
Pashinyan emphasized that democracy stands at the heart of Armenia’s strategy to strengthen ties with the EU, the United States, and other Western allies. He underlined that while Armenia is keen to deepen democratic values, it should not be at the expense of its regional relationships.
“Our actions toward the EU must be transparent, as should the intentions of our European partners,” he continued. “If a tangible opportunity to join the EU arises and we can manage the associated risks, we will definitely seize it.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect Armenia’s delicate balancing act between aligning with Western institutions and maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring countries. By advocating for transparency and caution, Pashinyan aims to navigate the complexities of international diplomacy while advancing Armenia’s national interests.
The announcement has sparked discussions among political analysts and the Armenian diaspora regarding the potential impacts on the region’s geopolitical landscape. As Armenia positions itself closer to the EU, questions arise about how this shift will influence its economic development, security partnerships, and cultural exchanges.
For many Armenians, both at home and abroad, the possibility of EU membership represents hope for a more prosperous and stable future. The government’s commitment to democratic principles and transparent dealings signals a desire to integrate more fully into the global community while honoring its unique heritage and regional ties.
