China’s 19-year-old rising tennis star Shang Juncheng spent a memorable Mid-Autumn Festival cruising along the Jin River with his parents and grandparents ahead of his anticipated appearance at the Chengdu Open.
Born in 2005, Shang is the only child of former Xerez CD footballer Shang Yi and table tennis world champion Wu Na. With a strong athletic lineage, he has been steadily climbing up the professional tennis rankings, making a name for himself on the international stage.
At this week’s ATP 250 Chengdu Open, Shang is set to face wild-card entrant Kei Nishikori of Japan in the opening round. Nishikori, a former World No. 4 and the 2014 US Open runner-up, presents a significant challenge for the young player.
Earlier in January, Shang made history by becoming the first man from the Chinese mainland to reach the third round of the Australian Open. He later joined Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing as the third man from the Chinese mainland to break into the Top 100 rankings, signaling a new era for Chinese men’s tennis.
