WIPO Director General Praises China’s Leadership in Global IP Innovation

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, has commended China’s significant contributions to the global intellectual property (IP) ecosystem. In a recent interview with Chinese media in Beijing, Tang highlighted China’s rapid growth in IP applications, noting that the country has become the largest filer of international patent applications worldwide.

“China has paid a lot of attention to research and development, and scientific and industrial innovation,” Tang remarked. “I believe this trend is set to continue as China pursues high-quality development with a stronger emphasis on science, technology, and innovation.”

According to WIPO’s preliminary report on the “Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024“, China is home to 26 of the world’s top 100 science and technology innovation clusters, maintaining its position as the global leader for two consecutive years. This achievement underscores China’s commitment to fostering an environment where innovation thrives.

Tang also attended the opening ceremony of the third Belt and Road High-Level Conference on Intellectual Property in Beijing on September 11. He praised the conference for promoting international collaboration and the exchange of ideas, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

Furthermore, Tang highlighted the growing participation of Chinese companies in the WIPO GREEN program, where they contribute green technologies and offer support. “In this way, we can show the world that IP is not just to address local challenges and national challenges, but also global challenges,” he stated.

China’s active role in global IP initiatives reflects its dedication to innovation and sustainable development. As the nation continues to lead in IP filings and technological advancements, its contributions are poised to have a lasting impact on the global innovation landscape.
