Filipino Scholar Highlights Historic Ties with China via South China Sea

The Philippines and China share a rich history of peaceful coexistence spanning over a millennium, connected by the vast expanse of the South China Sea. Philippine scholar Rommel Banlaoi emphasizes that long before Western colonization, the South China Sea served as “the source of our connection” with China.

“As a close neighbor of China, we want to go back to our peaceful coexistence,” Banlaoi stated, reflecting on the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. He suggests that reviving these historical bonds could pave the way for enhanced cooperation and understanding in the region.

The South China Sea, historically a conduit for trade and cultural exchange, has been central to the relationship between the Philippines and China. Banlaoi’s insights call attention to the importance of looking back at shared histories to foster mutual respect and collaboration in the present day.
